ABOUT THIS SPECIES

Varanus panoptes horni is the New Guinea form of the Argus Monitor - powerfully built, ground-oriented, and constantly on the move when settled. The “Argus” name comes from the rows of eye-like ocelli along the back and flanks, which stand out strongly on many individuals. In the wild it’s associated with warm lowland habitats and spends much of its time foraging over open ground, using burrows and cover when it wants security or cooler microclimates.

In captivity the make-or-break is space and substrate: they’re enthusiastic diggers and benefit from enough depth to create their own retreats, plus a strong heat gradient with a properly hot basking zone. Give them lots of usable floor area, solid hides, and structured edges to investigate, and you’ll see confident daytime activity and purposeful “patrol” behaviour.
