ABOUT THIS SPECIES

Varanus rudicollis, commonly called the Rough-neck Monitor, is a medium to large monitor lizard native to the forests and lowland regions of Southeast Asia. It is named for the distinct roughened scales on its neck and throat, which give it a textured appearance.

This species is semi-arboreal, spending time both in trees and on the ground while actively hunting insects, small mammals, and other prey. Its strong limbs, prehensile tail, and alert behaviour make it an agile climber and capable forager.
