ABOUT THIS SPECIES

Varanus salvadorii is a big, long-tailed, rainforest monitor built for life off the ground. In the wild it’s associated with lowland tropical forest and mangrove swamps, spending much of its time in the canopy and using that extraordinary tail for balance and control. The head is long and the teeth are noticeably recurved, suiting a predator that takes fast, agile prey as well as eggs and opportunistic meals.

In captivity, success hinges on vertical space, a strong temperature gradient, and consistently high humidity with proper airflow. These lizards are athletic, alert, and highly capable climbers, so the enclosure must be robust, secure, and furnished with large-diameter branches and elevated basking choices.
