ABOUT THIS SPECIES

Trioceros jacksonii is a distinctive arboreal chameleon native to the cooler, mountainous regions of East Africa. It is best known for the three forward-facing horns found on adult males, giving rise to the common name “three-horned chameleon.” Females are typically smaller and usually lack prominent horns.

This species inhabits forested slopes and montane habitats where temperatures are relatively mild compared with many other tropical reptiles. Jackson’s chameleons spend most of their time among branches and foliage, moving slowly through vegetation while using their independently rotating eyes to scan for prey. When hunting, they rely on a rapid projectile tongue to capture insects.

Like other chameleons, they possess specialised climbing adaptations including zygodactylous feet and a prehensile tail, allowing them to grip branches securely. Their colour can shift between shades of green, yellow and darker tones depending on mood, temperature and environmental conditions.
