Setting up

Heating: Basking spot of 30–32°C with the cool side at 22–24°C. A night-time drop to around 18–20°C is acceptable and beneficial.

Humidity: 40–60%, using a layer of moisture-retentive substrate and light spot-misting when a shed is approaching. Avoid consistently damp conditions, as this species tolerates drier environments well.

UVB: A 6% UVB tube along most of the vivarium's width, positioned so the snake can bask 20–30cm from the lamp. Kingsnakes aren't dedicated baskers, but low-level UVB supports long-term health.

Diet: Defrosted mice or rats of an appropriate size, roughly as wide as the snake's widest point. Feed juveniles every 5–7 days and adults every 10–14 days.

About the Californian Kingsnake Setup

Californian kingsnakes are robust, adaptable snakes that feed reliably on defrosted prey and tend to tame down well with regular, gentle handling, so they suit keepers of almost any experience level. Adults average 90–120cm and need a Viperia PVC vivarium of at least 120×60×60cm for a single adult, so both tiers use that size. Essentials pairs an aberrant-patterned kingsnake with a sliding-door vivarium; Recommended steps up to an albino striped morph with a hinged-door vivarium.
